Fresh off of the fifth draw in five tries with the NASL Spring Season champion New York Cosmos last Sunday in Long Island, the “Boys in Blue” return to the The Mike on Saturday to take on the Carolina RailHawks - the current Fall Season leader and the team right in front of Indy Eleven in the overall NASL season standings. Carolina is coming into the Hoosier State on a short week after a 1-1 draw with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in Cary, NC, on Wednesday evening. Indy Eleven will look to capitalize on its regular weekly schedule and chip away at the four-point margin between it and the RailHawks as it continues to try and climb up the NASL's combined season table.
HISTORY vs. CAROLINA: Indy Eleven and Carolina faced off in Indy’s inaugural NASL game back on April 12, 2014, and have played four times total over the last two seasons, both teams collecting a 1W-2D-1L record. Three of those four contests have come at Carroll Stadium, where Carolina holds a 1-2-0 advantage …
Last time out vs. Carolina: April 25, 2015 vs. Cosmos 1-1 D
During their 2015 Spring Season meet-up, the “Boys in Blue” looked poised to take the full three points, only to concede last in a 1-1 draw at a sold-out Carroll Stadium. Indy Eleven caught an early break and went ahead in the 6th minute, when a Charlie Rugg cross into the box was deflected by Carolina defender Daniel Scott into the back of the net for an own goal.
Indy Eleven would hold the lead for a majority of the game, and even had chances to extend that lead to two goals at various points in the 90 minutes. The best chance came in the 78th minute when Rugg, Brad Ring, and Dragan Stojkov each had a crack at a goal after Carolina ‘keeper Hunter Gilstrap strayed from the goal, but all saw their chances blocked or saved to keep things at 1-0.
The missed opportunities would bite the Eleven down the stretch, as Carolina’s Blake Wagner buried a Tiyi Shipalane cross from 12 yards out in the 85th minute to draw level at 1-1. The game would end in a draw, but the tie would extend Indy Eleven’s unbeaten streak to 9 games…the largest in club history.

REGAN REGIME ON HOLD SATURDAY: The “Boys in Blue” have helped usher in the Tim Regan era for Indy Eleven with four straight unbeaten matches across NASL and international friendly play. When combining the 2-2 draw with Tampa Bay in ex-coach Juergen Sommer’s finale on May 30 with back-to-back wins at Fort Lauderdale (2-1 on June 6) and home vs. FC Edmonton (3-0 on June 13) and last Sunday’s 1-1 draw at New York, Indy Eleven has collected a four-game undefeated streak in NASL play that pushed the team from the basement in the 11-team league into 4th place in the combined standings heading into Saturday’s game vs. Carolina.
However, Regan won’t be able to direct his charges against the RailHawks from the sidelines this weekend, as his ejection from the bench late in last weekend’s match at the Cosmos means the interim boss will pass the sideline reigns to assistant coach Kleberson for Saturday night’s affair against Carolina.
INFIMRARY UPDATE: After a particularly rough week in training last week, the “Boys in Blue” took it easy on each other this week and have all but cleared the Community Health Network Sports Medicine Injury Report. Injuries that affected the playing time of defender Judson McKinney (R ankle), midfielder Victor Pineda (L/R ribs) and forwards Charlie Rugg (R quad) and Brian Brown (R ankle) have cleared up enough to see them compete fully in practice in preparation for Saturday night’s affair against Carolina. Other than the long-term injuries that Kleberson (Achilles surgery) & Sergio Pena (L/R compartment syndrome surgery) continue to work through, all is quiet on the injury front.
WHO TO WATCH, INDY ELEVEN EDITION – FORWARDS
With Brian Brown and Charlie Rugg both limited due to injury last weekend in New York (as noted above), youngsters Wojciech Wojcik and Duke Lacroix were called into action by Indy Eleven interim head coach Tim Regan and thrived on the opportunity. Lacroix was coming off of his first NASL goal to conclude the Spring Season against FC Edmonton—an 82nd minute goal in June 13th’s 3-0 win - and created a handful of dangerous opportunities, only to see them go begging in his first career start. Wojcik had yet to tally a goal in an Indy Eleven uniform before Sunday, but he did just that in the 26th minute off of a wonderfully struck volley. The play of the two forwards not only helped the “Boys in Blue” to results, but it also showed that Indy Eleven has reliable backups at the forward position. With Rugg and Brown now ready to return to the lineup, it will be interesting to see who Regan (and Kleberson) decide to fill out the starting spots up top.
WHO TO WATCH, RAILHAWKS EDITION – MF TIYI SHIPALANE
Shiplane has been a flurry of energy for the Railhawks this season—being named to the NASL Team of the Week four times (2nd in the league) as well as tallying four goals and four assists. For a team that has scored the second-most goals in the NASL this season (19), there is no doubt that their offense runs through the 29 year old South African Shipalane. Indy saw that back in the Spring Season on April 25th when Shipalane’s cross was converted into a goal by attacker Blake Wagner to bring the game to a 1-1 draw and snatch two points from the home-side. In order to quell Carolina’s relentless attacking presence, Indy Eleven will have to shut down Shipalane who acts as the source of much of the pressure.
