It's the dawn of a new era for Indy Eleven tonight in South Florida, as new interim head coach Tim Regan will make his debut as the sideline leader for the "Boys in Blue" as they try to take the full three points from Lockhart Stadium against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
REGAN REACTION
Plenty has been written and said about Indy Eleven's technical staff shake-up that came down on Tuesday, so no need to say it again ... click here for a piece on the swap at IndyEleven.com featuring the voices of a trio of veteran players and click here for reaction from Regan and club President/GM Peter Wilt from Tuesday.
SERIES HISTORY vs STRIKERS
Indy Eleven is still seeking its first win over the Strikers after going 0W-1D-2L against FTL during its inaugural season in 2014:
FTL 3:2 IND – Apr. 26: Kleberson’s first NASL goal – a 26th minute PK – canceled out Martin Nunez’s 8’ opener, but Erick Norales’ 2nd goal in as many games late in stoppage time wasn’t enough to counter 2nd half strikes by Fafa Picault and Marius Ebbers in Indy’s first road game.
IND 0:0 FTL – Aug. 6: Kristian Nicht needed to make just one save to record his 2nd clean sheet in 3 games in the draw, the first scoreless tie in club history. Indy was reduced to 10 men for the final half hour following Jermaine Jones’ 59th minute red card.
FTL 2:1 IND – Sept 20: Fafa Picault scored less than a minute in to put Indy on its heels from the get-go. Jaime Frias’ first professional goal in the 39’ sent the match to the half at 1-1, but Martin Nunez’s tally in the 55th minute would make the difference in South Florida.
ELEVEN RAINS OUT GOAL DROUGHT
Going into last Saturday’s match against Tampa Bay, the “Boys in Blue” had scored just once in its last 474 minutes across both competitions, but goals by Dylan Mares (21’) and Kyle Hyland (98+’) gave Indy Eleven just its second multi-goal performance of 2015 (4/18 @ SAS) – and a much needed point from a hard-earned draw. Here’s the synopsis of Indy’s scoring in its last 7 games, bookended by those two-goal performances:
April 18 @ SAS (2-1 W): Norales 64’, Peña 89’
April 25 vs. CAR (1-1 D): own goal 6’ (Daniel Scott)
May 9 @ JAX (0-1 L): shutout
May 16 vs. MNU (1-3 L): Peña 49’
May 23 @ OTT (0-1 L): shutout
May 27 vs. LOU (0-2 L): shutout (120 minutes)
May 30 vs. TBR (2-2 D): Mares 21’, Hyland 98+’
CLAW FOR DRAW PUSHES WINLESS STREAK TO 5 GAMES
While last week’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Tampa Bay at least yielded a point, it also pushed Indy Eleven's winless streak in NASL play to five games (and six games overall when counting last Wednesday’s USOC loss to Louisville City FC). The streak counts as the third longest winless run in club history behind the 9-game run to start off its inaugural season and a 6-game stretch that developed across the month of August last year.
NO SMART PLAY ... FOR ONCE
Last weekend's draw with Tampa Bay marked the 38th game in all competitions for Indy Eleven ... and the first game in which midfielder Don Smart did not see the field. The Jamaican had been a late-game staple off the bench when not starting for Indy Eleven, as he was a substitute in 25 of his 37 appearances leading up to last weekend.
CLIMB THE LADDER?
While it's no fun to look up at everyone in the NASL's Spring Season standings, the last-place Eleven are still just one win away from jumping up to the middle of the table. With the six teams immediately ahead of the "Boys in Blue" (7 pts.) three points or less away, Indy could jump as many as five spots in the table with some help across the league this weekend.
